Used Oil Solvent Extraction Technology (1995)
Summary:
Solvent extraction was studied for its potential to upgrade used oils.
Low temperature distillation, (current technology), cannot significantly
reduce ash and other residues in used oil. Highly sophisticated technologies
are not economical or safe for small-scale operations. This project
describes and diagrams a preliminary design for using solvent extraction
to produce an improved oil product, at a scale and simplicity of operation
consistent with the used oil recycling industry
The oil product output appeared suitable for blending with higher value
fuel oils and with lubricating stock. Construction of a pilot scale
solvent treatment plant would be required to refine and validate the
technology.
