Manufacturing Resilient Floor Tiles From Mixed Carpet Waste (2000)

Summary:

This resilient floor tile, intended for industrial applications, is made from a blend of post-industrial plastic and used carpet. The unique capability of this process is that combines many different types of carpet waste as well as carpet backings.

This company developed and installed a new extrusion system, which homogenizes the mixed stream, does not require separation of the different types of material in the carpet waste stream, and actually utilizes the fiberglass, nylon, and polyester as reinforcing fibers in their tile product.

Product quality testing showed the tile manufactured with the new process met all specifications using 20% recycled mixed carpet.
