Beneficial Use of Spent Calcium Hydroxide from Fruit Cold Storage Warehouses (1997)

Bagged calcium hydroxide is used extensively in controlled atmosphere warehouse facilities to keep stored fruit from ripening prior to shipment. Most of the spent calcium hydroxide (which converts to calcium carbonate) is landfilled or stockpiled.

This project evaluated reprocessing of this material into high-value lime products for use as filler in numerous industrial and agricultural applications. The evaluation demonstrated that the spent lime can be reprocessed to meet stringent industry product-quality specifications.
