Testing of Short Fiber Mill Residuals in a Poultry Bedding Product (1998)

Summary:

With a shortage of conventional wood shaving bedding material for animals such as poultry, and the post-industrial waste problem of short-fiber residuals (SFR) from pulp and paper production, this project sought to evaluate SFR for use as a poultry bedding product. The mill-based SFR bedding formulations performed equal to traditional beddings in one actual growth period for poultry. Bird health, litter caking, and use of the spent litter in a compost were evaluated.
