Shredded Scrap Tires as Lightweight Fill in Road Embankments (1995)

Summary:

Sawdust or chipped lumber has often been used as lightweight fill material to repair land slips that commonly occur under road embankments. Wood products are not ideal since they tend to decay over time, and shredded scrap tires may be a viable alternative. Installation, benefits and recommendations are provided for utilizing scrap tire in road fill.

Note: In the later 1990's, subsequent to this project and testing, one fire occurred in a Washington road project that contained shredded tire in the fill. This fire was UNRELATED to the project noted here.

Since the project noted here, the CWC has not followed up with any recent safety issues of utilizing shredded tires in fill, however, to our knowledge, no other related road fires have occurred.
