Introducing CWC’s Standard Occupational Classification Crosswalk

April 15, 2026

What's New

CWC is pleased to present a new occupational crosswalk, mapping each of the 4-digit Occupation Classification Codes (OCC) from the Census Bureau’s 2014-2018 EEO Tabulation to various occupation classification systems. CWC’s crosswalk links each of the 236 OCCs to a suggested: (1) 2-digit Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) System Major Group; (2) 6-digit SOC Code; and (3) federal EEO-1 category. CWC’s crosswalk serves as a helpful tool for organizations to use in next year’s California Pay Reporting cycle, which eliminates EEO-1 category in favor of 2-digit SOC Major Group. The crosswalk is also helpful for mapping occupations to a corresponding 6-digit SOC code.

What It Means

Please note that not all OCCs have a single 6-digit SOC equivalent. For example, you will see that the 6-digit SOC Code contains an “X” or “Y” in certain classifications, indicating that further SOC research is needed to correctly map the OCC to a full 6-digit SOC Code. There are also instances in which the 6-digit SOC Code recommendation from the U.S. Census Bureau requires further refinement. For example, OCC 9030, “Air Transportation Workers,” aligns with SOC Code 53-2000 and EEO-1 Category 7. However, this OCC is a broad classification that includes pilots, flight attendants, and other air transportation roles, each of which is more accurately captured by a specific SOC Code available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What You Should Do

SOC codes are becoming increasingly important in various federal, state, and local reporting requirements. CWC members are encouraged to use the CWC crosswalk as a tool in achieving a more complete SOC mapping.
