President Trump Announces He’ll Nominate Sonderling To Serve As Labor Secretary

June 30, 2026

What's New

On June 29, President Trump announced that he would nominate Keith E. Sonderling to serve as Secretary of Labor. Sonderling currently serves as Acting Secretary and Deputy Secretary at DOL.

Sonderling previously served as a Commissioner (2020-2024) and Vice Chair (2020-2021) of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. During the first Trump Administration, he served as Deputy and Acting Administrator of DOL’s Wage and Hour Division. He has also spoken at several CWC policy conferences during his tenure at the EEOC and DOL.

What It Means

Sonderling’s nomination signals the President’s confidence in his leadership of DOL following former Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s resignation in April. Because Sonderling already serves as Acting Secretary, employers should expect continuity rather than a major shift in direction, particularly as the Department appears to be taking a more disciplined approach to advancing the Administration’s workplace policy agenda. It remains unclear how quickly the Senate will consider the nomination.

What You Should Do

Employers should monitor the status of Sonderling’s nomination, because confirmation could give DOL’s current policy and regulatory direction greater stability and institutional weight. CWC members can track those developments using CWC’s nominations and appointments tracker resource.
